Raised in Tokyo Japan, Mitsu graduated from Washington University School of Medicine in 2021 with M.D. and Ph.D. in Neuroscience. He studied the role of systemic NAD+ biosynthesis in aging and disease for his Ph.D. dissertation. He joined the Sleepy Brain Lab in 2021 as an anesthesiology resident, investigating the role of neuro- and systemic metabolism in the pathophysiology of delirium among geriatric patients undergoing cardiothoracic surgery. In addition to performing clinical duties as an anesthesiology resident, he remains active in bench science and leads several ongoing basic science projects in the laboratory of Dr. Rajedra Apte at the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science. He plans to pursue a cardiothoracic anesthesia fellowship as a part of the Academic Scholars Advancement Program in the Department of Anesthesiology. Mitsu holds a 5th-degree black belt in Japanese fencing (kendo) and teaches at the local community center. In his spare time, he enjoys learning new things, performing experiments, and spending time with his wife and three daughters.
